Worry

Growing up I dealt heavily with worry, stress and anxiety. It was a constant in my life. And a lot of times I did not know how to navigate releasing my unnecessary worries. ‌Even as an adult I worry at times.

Heyyy boo!!

What does it mean to worry? Worrying is when you give way to anxiety or allow unease to settle in. It is when you allow your mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles. It’s when you’re in a place of anxiety or uncertainty over actual or even potential problems.

We all worry at some point in our lives. Some of us worry daily. And we have different worries. Your worry may not be my worry. And that’s ok. As adults we can pile it on and not even realize we are worrying about something. Even young people worry about things that we, as adults, may see as small. But it does not negate the fact that it’s big to them.

We all worry about something!

Worrying eats away at you. It can cause a lot of problems like:

  • Stress.
  • Anxiety.
  • Depression.
  • Speed up your heart rate.
  • Speed up your breathing.
  • Raise blood sugar levels.
  • Have a negative affect on your muscles.
  • Cause migraines and tension headaches.
  • Weakens your immune system.
  • Cause digestion issues leading to acid reflux.

According to WebMD, worrying can also cause many long-term issues like:

  • A negative effect on your heart and blood vessels.
  • Cause high blood pressure.
  • Increase risk for heart attack.
  • Increase risk of stroke.
  • Harden your artery walls.
  • Cause unhealthy cholesterol levels.
  • Increase risk of heart disease.
  • Increase risk of kidney disease.
  • Cause stomach pain and sores in stomach lining.
  • Cause intestine issues.

Can I tell you a secret? God did not design you to worry. We should not dwell in worry. We should not wallow in worry. We should not get stuck there. I often talk to my daughter about being confident in who she is, in her capabilities, in school (her grades, friends, new classes with more challenges), in sports (travel ball and school athletics), and even in church (interacting in worship).

We have to be confident in who we are. We also have to be confident in who God is and what he has already done in our lives. If He did it before, be confident in knowing that He will do it again.

I absolutely love the words to the song ‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’ where it says “oh what peace we often forfeit all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.” So beautifully spoken with so much truth and power. When we are in a constant state of worry there is no room for peace. Your mind and heart are preoccupied with issues and struggles. Oh but what a privilege it is to be able to carry everything we face to God in prayer. We must release our worries to God in prayer. God does not want us to carry needles pain around with us when he is offering his peace.

I want to remind you that prayer is simple. It doesn’t not have to be fancy and filled with high and mighty words. Just talk to God from your heart in your own words. God loves you! And He loves when we take our worries and concerns to him. And leave it with him and allow His peace to flood your heart. You do not have to worry!

I’ll leave you with the amazing words from Bob Marley, “Don’t worry about a thing, because every little thing is gonna be alright.”

I hope this post shined light where you needed it. I’d love to hear your thoughts! Let’s chat in the comments.
